how do I apply for college grants for my HS senior when my husband passed away Aug 2009?

In searching Pell Grant and such, application state I will need w2′s. Well I will not have the same financial situation I had last year and up until August 2009! I don’t know what to do, please help? We have a little insurance money but If I use all that for college for my 2 girls, I won’t have anything for my retirement. Scared.
